Biotechnology can speed the production of ethanol for gasohol, methane for natural gas and crops for biorenewable fuel. For example, yeasts ferment cornstarch to yield ethanol; bacteria decompose sludge, manure or landfill wastes to produce methane; and firewood heats homes.
