Data Transfer Instructions

Your deliverable data can be downloaded at the UWBC Facility Files download page.

Need to transfer your data from the BRC computer lab to your own computer? We have a server for that! You will need to connect using SFTP. You can get clients that make this easy:

For Windows:

Download and install WinSCP. When you start the application you will get a dialog called WinSCP Login. Enter brchome.biotech.wisc.edu under Host name and enter your BRC username and password. Make sure SFTP is selected under Protocol. Click Login. If you get a message saying "The server's host key was not found in the cache..." click Yes. If you need more assistance see this page:

Guide to setting up WinSCP (Windows File Transfer)

For Macs:

Download and install CyberDuck. Select Open Connection under the File menu. Select SFTP from the drop down menu, enter brchome.biotech.wisc.edu under Server and enter your BRC username and password. Then click Connect. If you get a message that says "Unknown host key for brchome.biotech.wisc.edu" click Allow. Use the Help menu in the application if you need further assistance.

NOTES:

  • Don't forget to DELETE the data from our server after you download it, or your account directory will fill up and you will not be able to do any work on our machines.
  • You can only connect to this server from the UW-Madison network.
  • Please use a WIRED connection to transfer large amounts of data.
  • Make sure you have enough hard drive space to hold the data.
  • You can't use this server to analyze your data, just to download it. There are no data analysis applications installed.
