Campus Open House

The University of Wisconsin-Madison had three days of hands-on fun and education as part of a free Campus Open House Aug. 18-20, 2000. (Click to see original website)
The event featured interactive, educational and entertaining activities for people of all ages, says Noel Radomski, director of the Visitor Services program: "Together, our schools, colleges and other units provided visitors with a snapshot of the great discoveries, instructional initiatives, outreach efforts, cultural life and athletic programs of the university."

The entire Campus opened its doors with tours, concerts, special events and freebies. Parking in university lots was free Saturday, and buses shuttled visitors between the major event sites.
Events were centered on several major locations and timing was staggered so that people could visit several sites throughout the day. Some of the highlights over the three days included:
  • 56 bronze bells of the 85-foot carillon tower, the politics of the 2000 election, and enjoying a cool neon light show.
  • A look inside a state of the art Med Flight emergency helicopter and exploration of the inner workings of the human brain.
  • Hands-on fun extracting DNA from wheat germ and an exploration of the genetic codes of living plants and bacteria.
  • Visits to the milking parlor, a look at the veterinary school, and learning about butterflies, beetles and bipeds with the Creepy Crawly Zoo.

  • Hands-on astronomy activities, peeks at the stars at Washburn Observatory, a look at Antarctic weather from a satellite, and learning about past and future climates.
  • Neat cars students made, picture sessions taken in front of the famous Engineering Fountain and Heisman Trophy.
