Production of Novel Proteins in Transgenic Alfalfa

Sandra Austin-Phillips

Senior Scientist

There is considerable interest in developing value added products from crop plants. One avenue for this is to produce novel proteins such as pharmeceuticals of commodity enzymes in transgenic plants. We have produced the animal feed enzyme phytase in transgenic alfalfa. Addition of phytase to poultry and swine diets allows the animal to better utilize the phosphorus in the diet leading to less P supplementation and correspondingly less P in manure. Transgenic alfalfa leaf meal or alfalfa juice added directly to diets has proven efficacious.
