Optical Mapping of Rice DNA

Michael Bechner
Associate Research Specialist
Laboratory of Molecular and Computational Genomics UW-Madison

Michael Bechner presents on the topic of using optical DNA mapping in the Rice Genome Project. The Rice Genome Project is a multi-national effort to learn enough about the genetics of rice to be able to futher improve the world's most important food crop.
Optical mapping is a method of microcopically imaging DNA fragments to assist in mapping genes. Innovated largely by UW-Madison's David Schwartz, optical mapping can help sequencers more accurately orient gene sequences in the larger genome.
