Understanding Outrage |
||
Mary Ellen Bell | |||
| Scientists and people in the biotechnology industry often contend that if people understood the science behind biotechnology, their worries would evaporate. And often, they are amazed, after theyÕve carefully explained the science, when the public is still just as wary as before. Why? Because of Òoutrage,Ó explains risk communication guru Peter Sandman. Sandman points out that the level of outrage may have little to do with the actual hazard, but it has everything to do with public acceptance and public opinion. | |||
| This presentation will be a brisk walk through SandmanÕs ideas, as expressed in his book ÒResponding to Community Outrage: Strategies for Effective Risk Communication,Ó to help conference participants understand how outrage can hinder effective communication and teaching and learning about biotechnology or any controversial topic. | |||
