Ethical Issues Arising from the Use of Enviropigs |
Robert StreifferAssistant Professor of Philosophy and Bioethics |
| This session will introduce you to a variety of ethical perspectives on "Enviropigs," possibly one of the first genetically engineered animals which will be commercialized for food. Enviropigs have been engineered to have reduced amounts of phosphorous in their manure, thus offering the potential for more environmentally friendly hog farms. Participants will engage in a role-playing ethics case study that will give them a chance to formulate, hear, and debate ethical arguments for and against the use of Enviropigs from the consumer, environmentalist, hog farmer, and regulatory perspectives. | |||
